Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
